Air taxis for 2024 Paris Olympics are under development.
2 min readAs per the capital city’s airport operator, the aircraft will vertically transport a single passenger between hubs with takeoff and landing.
Preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics coincide with the launch of the world’s inaugural electric air taxi network. Groupe ADP’s Solène Le Bris revealed plans at Amsterdam Drone Week for the first e-VTOL pre-commercial service, featuring five vertiports. VoloCity air taxis will utilize established helicopter routes, carrying one passenger and one pilot on routes from Charles de Gaulle airport to Le Bourget and Austerlitz Paris, as well as a route from Paris to Sans-Cyr. Termed the “Tesla of the skies,” the project’s initial vertiport, functioning as a test center, is already operational in Cergy-Pontoise.
Thierry Allain, DGAC’s head of innovation, emphasizes a safety-focused strategy. Regulation issues are minor; certification by EASA for VoloCity and the operator is crucial. They are developing regulations for this purpose.
Romain Erny, Choose Paris Region’s head of aerospace and mobility, sees the air taxi future tied to public response. Olympics are the second step; assessing people’s reaction is crucial. Many Parisians view it as science fiction and need firsthand experience. Olympics mark the starting point for this evaluation.
Ankit Dass, Skyports’ CTO, ensures seamless passenger experiences in ports. Different cities have varied preferences, some envisioning it like a metro, while others prioritize heightened security.
Currently, specialists are debating the need for extra emergency landing pads and assessing potential negative effects of helicopter-induced wind turbulence on lower-flying air taxis.
