AI’s influence on work is foreseen, impacting five crucial aspects.

As artificial intelligence nears, will it positively transform farming, education, healthcare, and the military, or usher in a bleaker future?

In 1965, Nobel laureate and political scientist Herbert Simon predicted that machines would reach human capabilities within two decades. Today, as we step into the fourth industrial revolution, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in workplaces is causing similar concerns.

The upcoming Artificial Intelligence Act by the European Parliament is anticipated to categorize AI use in education, law enforcement, and worker management as “high risk.” Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the “godfather of AI,” recently resigned from his position at Google, expressing worries about the impact of technology on employment. Additionally, members of the Writers Guild of America, on strike in early May, conveyed a clear message to executives: “AI will replace you before it replaces us.”

Despite these apprehensions, Philip Torr, a professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, argues that the imperfections of AI tools, driven solely by data and algorithms rather than emotions, will ensure the ongoing necessity of humans in the workplace.

Torr asserts, “Throughout history, industrial revolutions have typically led to increased employment rather than reduction. I believe we will witness a shift in job types, but it’s merely a natural evolution.

Education

Artificial intelligence (AI) is presently utilized to a restricted degree in schools, colleges, and universities. However, as automation progressively infiltrates the educational realm, Professor Rose Luckin, specializing in learner-centered design at University College London Knowledge Lab, underscores the significance of the choices we make today in shaping its future implications.

Luckin cautions against a dystopian scenario where excessive authority is ceded to AI. She envisions an education system that becomes markedly more cost-effective, with a considerable portion of instructional responsibilities being managed by AI systems.
